'Should I use a portable backrest on my office chair?' Probably not, simply because they have a tendency to make the seat too short, or to push the upper back away from the backrest. Our first option would always be to try and get a chair that fits you correctly without the need for add-on support.
This being said, portable backrests are ideal for travel, or meetings, or even on your sofa/dining chair at home. You can't very well take your favourite office chair with you on the plane to Majorca! However, it is important to get something that still fits in with the environment you are in. Plane seats are notoriously short, even for those with short legs, so please don't opt for a really thick back support that ends up giving you even less room! Opt for something nice and thin, just to fill the gap in the lumbar area, even inflatable so it doesn't take up too much room in your hand luggage. On the other hand, a larger backrest, such as the Obusforme Low, or Therapeutica, can work wonders in vans and lorries where support is traditionally minimal. In my experience these types of seats tend to be quite flat, both in the lumbar, and kidney area, and it is nice to have something large that supports the whole of your back. You can even get the Therapuetica backrest with a neck support!
Seat wedges are also a very good idea for many forms of travel where the hips sink to low in the seat. This can force the pelvis to rotate backwards and drag the spine down, losing the natural lumbar curve and causing discomfort. Sitting in a seat wedge can offer relief by raising the hips and opening up the pelvic angle. Do be aware however that if you are using a seat wedge that is quite steep, you may find that you don't connect as well with the backrest. So choose wisely! I find the best one the 8 Degree Seat wedge with standard foam. It doesn't compress too easily and just gives the slight elevation that I need to keep the pelvic angle open whilst maintaining contact with the backrest of the seat ion the right area - but it is a very personal thing!
